Behind The Wheel/Driver Education Information
About Driver Education at PMSA
The Driver Education Program is a two-phase program at PMSA. The two separate phases consist of classroom and behind the wheel (on-street driving), which meet the requirements set by the State of Illinois.
To be eligible for enrollment in this program, students must receive a passing grade in a minimum of eight (8) courses during the previous two (2) school semesters; complete and submit an application for an instructional permit and submit a check for $20.00 to the Secretary of State; and pass a written permit test and vision test.
To be eligible to receive an IL license, students must pass both the classroom and driving phases. They must attend a minimum of thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction and drive for a total of six (6) BTW hours. State law also requires each student to complete fifty (50) hours of practice driving with an adult (outside of class). Ten (10) of those hours must be in night driving conditions. All fifty (50) hours must be documented on the student driver log sheet.
The Behind the Wheel phase of Driver Education will be offered to students after school, on Saturdays and during the summer. To be eligible for this phase, students must previously take the classroom portion of driver's education or be concurrently enrolled.
For more information about the Drivers Ed program at PMSA, including the BTW phase, please contact our BTW coordinator Ms. Gina Parker gparker@pths209.org.
