• The students will design and build their own hot air balloons  as a cross curriculum project in chemistry class.   This project will incorporate the unit of gas laws.  Students will work on this project in their Chemistry, English, and Math courses.  In Chemistry, students will gather data for calculating volume, surface area, temperature inside and outside of the balloon, and mass of the balloon for this project.  It is an inquiry based activity where a group of students are given the same base materials and they choose the shape and design on their own.  The challenge would be to design a balloon that stays in the air the longest.  The dependent variable would be air time, and the independent variable would be volume.
