Mr. Alexander Aschoff

My name is Mr. Alexander Aschoff.  I have been a Proviso East Pirate since August of 2004. Proviso was my first teaching position after earning my Bachelors degree in Chemistry Education at Illinois State University.  I am certified to teach Chemistry and Physics.  I also earned my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University of Chicago.  I have coached the Wrestling and Golf Team.  I was the former sponsor of the School of Rock Club.  I am the current sponsor of the National Honor Society.  I currently serve as the Department Chair of Science, the Empower Liaison, and MasteryConnect Specialist.  Outside of Proviso, I am a husband, and proud father of a 7 year old, Aiden, and a 4 year old, Hunter.  My favorite thing to do other than Chemistry Experiments with fire is to ride one of my two motorcycles anywhere with a road.  I’ve traveled to 45 different states and several provinces of Canada.  As a family we love traveling and our favorite spots involve water and lots of sun. Among my Proviso family, my goal has always been to expose students to the amazing wonders that Science brings to our everyday lives through fun and challenging experiences.  Embrace your curiosity by questioning everything you observe.

Ms. McElhatton ("Mack-el-hat-in") is a newcomer to Proviso East in the fall of 2018. She is excited to bring her passion of the natural world to students at Proviso with hands-on biology and earth science demonstrations again after relocating from the Washington, D.C. region in 2017. She grew up along the coast of south Jersey where she received her undergraduate degree in Marine Science. She traveled south to Florida for her Master’s degree in teaching. Ms. McElhatton enjoys bringing her love of environmental education to families and communities as well with her outreach programs with Beach Chair Scientist (www.beachchairscientist.com). She can also be found gardening, running, or juggling family-life with her dog, two kids, and husband.

I have taught in the science department for three years at Proviso. Proviso East is a school with a long and interesting history. I have been lucky to teach a wonderful group of students whose curiosity and excitement makes coming to work each day a pleasure.

In addition to teaching biology and chemistry I have had the opportunity to sponsor Ecology Club. These students have worked on making sleeping mats for the homeless out of plastic bags, gone on field trips to clean up Maywood, and even eaten cricket cookies.

I grew up Tinley Park which is a suburb south of Chicago. I attended South Suburban College and Governors State University. I now live in Orland Park with my husband, three children, three dogs, and a leopard gecko. My two oldest girls are in high school, and my youngest son is starting fifth grade. I love to read and spend time with my family.

Nature and science have been a passion of mine since childhood and drove me to become a science teacher.   I have always been interested in understanding and identifying living things within my environment.  For example, I had a pet praying mantis in elementary school and brought it to school to show and describe to my classmates.

I have been at Proviso since 2004 and worked at Proviso West for 6 years before coming to Proviso East.  I went to Plainfield High School, Joliet Junior College, Southern Illinois University, and Miami University.  I have always taught Biology and love teaching freshmen, but I've also taught Physiology and excited to teach AP Environmental Science this year.

One of my favorite lessons to teach to my freshman Biology students is an earthworm inquiry lab teaching the scientific method through inquiry.  While completing my masters through the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP), I found myself fully engaged when I completed my own inquiries at Brookfield Zoo.  I also volunteer for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County (FPDDC) and created and continue to coordinate a volunteer program to help document and identify fungal diversity throughout the FPDDC.

Dr. Veronica Rundell earned a BA in biology from Northwestern when the internet was in its infancy, and a PhD in physiology and biophysics from UIC when dial-up was a thing. Since then, she's had four sons, a career in experimental science, taught college, and went back for her Masters in education. She's certified to teach biology, chemistry and physics and makes a habit of visiting Chicagoland attractions and museums whenever possible.

Dr. Rundell's teaching philosophy is to draw on students life experiences to demonstrate how science is a part of our ordinary lives each and every day.

This is my first year teaching at Proviso East. I look forward to learning about Proviso’s history and working with the students and community. I am an Earth & Space Science teacher with an endorsement in Biology. Prior to teaching, I had a career in business focusing on technology consulting and served as an Air Force Communications Officer for 4 years. My adventures on the Appalachian Trail and travels to Lake Superior in Canada, Yellowstone and Olympic National Parks, and Colorado’s Collegiate Mountains led me to pursue my passion for geology and teaching. I graduated in 2018 with a Master’s degree and a Professional Educator License in Geology from Northern Illinois University. I enjoy learning, listening to podcasts, exploring new places, and spending time outside with my wife and two young children.

Hello,  My name is Ms. Harriet Naylor and I have been working for Proviso School District for almost five years.  I worked for Proviso West High School for two years and this is my third year at Proviso East.  I love working for Proviso East because of the supportive staff and there are some awesome students that attends and have attended here.  I’m a only child and I grew up on the Westside of Chicago.  I attended Charles P. Steinmentz High School and I received my High School Diploma,  I went on to attend Robert Morris University and received my Associates Degree in Computerized Business and Accounting, I then attended Triton College and took some courses for A+, from there I went on to attend DeVry University and I received my Bachelors Degree in Technical Management and Security, and as of now I’m currently enrolled to attend school at the University of Phoenix to receive my Maters Degree in Special Education.  My hobbies are doing Genealogy and spending time with my family and friends. I have traveled and done family history for different families as well as mine.   I have always had a great love for science and I enjoy teaching children, showing them a new way of looking at science, and letting them know that science is a part of our everyday lives.
