Science (Emergent Bilingual)

Born and raised in Chicago, my natural curiosity and love of reading and nature drew me to the fascinating world of science.  I ran and danced my way to a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Secondary Education from Benedictine University.  I spent the next 17 years as a Science Educator at Foreman High School on Chicago’s North Side. During this time, my husband and I raised our three beautiful girls and, somehow, I found the time to become a National Board-Certified Teacher in Science for Young Adolescents.  In 2018, I left CPS to pursue and earn a Master's in Integrative Physiology from my alma mater.  The alignment of the stars led me back to the world of education.  I joined the Proviso East family in 2019 to teach Biology and Chemistry for Emergent Bilinguals.  Together, we explore the definition of life as we define our personal roles in the ever-changing world and build important life skills.

Students, if you would like to schedule a meeting with Ms. Castellanos-Guevara for Extended Learning Opportunity (ELOs) time or during Learning Support & Student Services time, please click here.

Science

Nature and science have been a passion of Ms. McAllister since childhood and drove her to become a science teacher.   “I have always been interested in understanding and identifying living things within my environment.  For example, I had a pet praying mantis in elementary school and brought it to school to show and describe to my classmates.”

Ms. McAllister began her teaching career at Proviso West in 1998 and joined the staff at Proviso East in 2004.  She attended Plainfield High School, Joliet Junior College, Southern Illinois University, and Miami University.  She has always taught Biology and loves teaching ninth graders.  Having also taught Physiology, she’s excited to teach AP Environmental Science.  One of her favorite lessons to teach ninth grade Biology students is an earthworm inquiry lab teaching the scientific method through inquiry.

While completing her masters through the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP), she found herself fully engaged when completing her own inquiries at Brookfield Zoo.  Ms. McAllister volunteers for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County (FPDDC) and created and continues to coordinate a volunteer program to help document and identify fungal diversity throughout the FPDDC.

Degrees and Certifications:

Associate degree in biology, Bachelor of Arts degree in Science with a concentration in environmental science, Master of Arts degree in biology with a focus on conservation education, teaching certification for secondary education

Tina Vega

Science

Ms. Vega is very proud to be a member of the Proviso East science team! She looks forward to bringing her science background into the classroom as she incorporates her real-world experiences with activities that engage students and help make learning science both fun and relevant to their everyday lives.

Ms. Vega attended Moraine Valley Community College where she received her associate degree in biology, then transferred to St. Xavier University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Science with a concentration in environmental science. With this degree she went on to work at the Brookfield Zoo as an animal care specialist for 12 years. She worked with over 70 species of animals from butterflies to bears! She soon learned that education was a major factor in getting people to care and protect our world, so she went on to get a Master of Arts degree in Biology from Miami University with a focus on conservation education. Using that degree, she worked with the zoo in their education department, but still did not feel like she was making the impact she wanted to. So, she went back to St. Xavier University on a graduate level and received a teaching certification for secondary education.

Ms. Vega feels she was lucky enough to be able to join this team and she looks forward to sharing everything she knows with the next generation. “As our students’ study and prepare for the real world, it is my mission to make sure they understand their role in caring for the planet and how the power of one can make a great impact.”
