Student Cell Phone Expectations
-
Effective at the start of the 2025–2026 school year, Proviso Township High Schools will implement new cell phone procedures to support a more focused, engaging, and emotionally healthy learning environment for all students.
What’s Changing
-
All classrooms will now have secure phone storage units called “Phone Homes.”
-
Upon entering class, students will place their phone in the holder and leave it stored for the entire class period.
-
Students will still be able to use their phones:
-
Before and after school
-
During passing periods
-
At lunch
-
Why This Approach?
Limiting phone use during instructional time has been shown to:
-
Improve focus and academic performance
-
Reduce classroom disruptions
-
Support mental well-being
-
Encourage stronger peer relationships
If a Student Doesn’t Comply
We have a clear, progressive response process:
-
Reminder – Teacher asks student to place the phone in the holder.
-
Confiscation – If the student refuses, security will collect the phone and hold it in the Dean’s Office until the end of the day.
-
Repeat Offenses – After three incidents, the student will turn in their phone each morning for one week.
Preparing for Success
-
All staff will be trained on the new procedure.
-
Students will receive clear guidance and reminders.
-
Bilingual signage and communication will be provided.
-
Families are encouraged to discuss and reinforce these expectations at home before the first day of school.
