    Will I be able to take the laptop home?

    Yes. The device will be assigned to you for the rest of the school year.

    Will I need to bring my laptop to school every day?

    Yes.  You are expected to bring the laptop every day, charged and ready to go.  It should be transported in the case that is distributed with the device.  Using the case will minimize accidents from occurring. 

    For what purpose am I to use the laptop?

    Students are to use technology or access District 209’s network for education and research purposes only.

    Where and how do I get to my files?

    What if I forgot to charge my laptop?

    There will be charging stations located around the school for you to use.  These locations include:

    • The Freshman Academy
    • Library
    • Lunchroom
    • Principal’s Office

     If you have an immediate need for a charged laptop, please contact the Technology Department within your school. 

    What if I forgot my laptop at home?

    It is your job to come prepared for school each day.  This includes bringing your laptop with you.  If you have forgotten to bring your laptop, please contact the Technology Department within your school.  Repeated failure to bring the laptop to class daily can result in discipline or other consequences as outlined in your student handbook, including, but is not limited to, impacting your score on the school-wide Code of Collaboration. 

    I have a personal laptop.  Can I bring that instead?

    No.  There are several reasons for this decision including our desire to maintain consistency within the classroom.  Additionally, we do not allow non-district owned devices access to our network.

    Can I keep the laptop over the summer?

    Possibly.  We will make a final decision in spring 2019 on if you will be allowed to keep the laptop this summer, or if it will be collected and reissued to you at the beginning of the school year.

    Are there rules which let me know what is acceptable when using a District issued laptop?

    The laptop you received and all of its components are the property of District 209.  To that end, there are policies and guidelines that govern your use of technology on and off the school’s campus including, but not limited to: 

    • You are the only authorized user of your assigned laptop.  Laptops (or their components) should not be traded with other students or individuals.
    • District 209 makes no claim of privacy. Devices, software, files, and email may be reviewed by an administrator at any time.
    • You must respect the privacy rights of others.  It is unlawful to disclose, use, or spread personal information regarding minors (students) without the written consent of the parents or guardians. 
    • You are not to submit, post, publish or display any defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, profane sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, harassing, or illegal material.
    • Care should be taken to protect the laptop from damaging messages or viruses.
    • You should not tamper with any settings or hardware on the laptop.

    Who do I contact if I have a problem with my laptop or need help getting logged into it?

    Please contact the Technology Department within your school. 

    How can I save the battery life on my device?

    On average, the device will hold a charge for 11 hours.  To get the maximum amount of time, you can lower the screen resolution and remember to turn your laptop off when not in use.

    Can I decorate my laptop?

    No. Laptops must not be marked with markers, stickers or other similar materials.  District 209 applied labels, asset tags and other identifiers may not be removed.

    What if I don’t have Internet access at home?

    You have access to the school’s network during Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs) and after hours for tutoring.  The laptop issued to you can sign in to most open Wi-Fi networks including those at libraries and businesses that offer free Wi-Fi.

    What do I do with the laptop if I leave the school District?

    You must return the laptop and its components upon withdrawal from enrollment at District 209.  If the laptop is retained for more than two school days after withdrawal, your family will be responsible for paying replacement costs.

    What happens if the laptop is damaged, lost, or stolen?

    You (and your parents or guardians) must take reasonable care to protect and properly use the laptop.  If the laptop is lost or stolen, the police must be notified within twenty-four (24) hours of the discovery of the theft or loss.  A police report, with details of the incident, must be filed and a copy submitted to the principal’s office.  Not doing so within the 24 hour timeframe will result in the family’s complete responsibility for the replacement of the technology. 

    If the device is lost, stolen, or damaged due to negligence, your family will be responsible for the cost of the replacement or repair.  Families are also responsible for replacement costs for lost or stolen laptop components such as batteries, power cords, AC adapters, or bags that have been damaged beyond normal wear.
