Course Description and Enrollment Requirements
Proviso Township High Schools offers a comprehensive Driver’s Education program designed to help students become safe, responsible, and knowledgeable drivers. The program includes Classroom Instruction and an optional Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) component.
Driver’s Education: In the Classroom
Course Overview
This three-phase course combines classroom theory, simulation activities, and optional behind-the-wheel experience in a dual-controlled vehicle. The course emphasizes safe, courteous, and legal vehicle operation while developing responsible driving attitudes.

Prerequisites

Must have Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing

Must have received a passing grade in at least eight (8) semester courses during the previous two (2) semesters
Permit Information

Students receive a driving permit at the beginning of the course

Permit must be held a minimum of nine (9) months plus one day before a license can be issued

Permit is valid for two (2) years

Illinois Secretary of State allows students ages 15–17 to obtain a permit within 30 days of starting an approved Driver’s Education course
Enrollment Guidelines

Sophomores enrolling in first semester must be born on or before March 15 of the year the course begins

Students born on or after March 16 will be enrolled in second semester unless special circumstances apply

Cut-off dates may vary based on enrollment, with priority given to older students

Repeat enrollment may be limited to summer sessions only

$20.00 permit application fee payable to the Illinois Secretary of State
(Covers the cost of the permit and a 3-year driver’s license) -

Driver’s Education: Behind-the-Wheel (BTW)
Course Overview
Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) is an optional six-hour driving course that provides students with supervised, hands-on driving instruction to build safe, real-world driving skills. While BTW is not required for graduation, it is required by the State of Illinois for any student who wishes to obtain a driver’s license before the age of 18. Families should be aware that if a student does not participate in BTW, they will not be eligible to receive an Illinois driver’s license until their 18th birthday.

Successful completion of Driver’s Education: In the Classroom (Successful completion of Driver’s Education: In the Classroom is required. Students may enroll in Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) concurrently with their in-class Driver’s Education course or after the in-class coursework has been completed. Students may not enroll in BTW before beginning their Driver’s Education: In the Classroom course.)
