Girls and Boys Track and Field Highlights
The PTHS D209 girls and boys track and field teams are growing and getting stronger each year! The 2019 season has been filled with many victories and celebrations. For the first time in almost fifteen years Proviso East High School hosted the 3A Boys Track and Field Sectionals where over seventeen high school track and field teams gave their best performance in quest of qualifying for the state competition.
On May 16, the PTHS D209 track and field teams shined at the sectionals with Proviso West Panthers earning fifth-place, Proviso East Pirates sixth-place, and several student-athletes earning a spot in the state finals.
The following PTHS D209 students qualified for the state finals:

Although there were a few hiccups this season, Proviso West coach Johnny Nolan-Jenkins is excited and honored to once again take the team to the state finals. “We started off the year with a few obstacles that included losing one of our state champion runners from last year due to a stress fracture however, two of my sophomores answered the challenge by stepping up to the plate and not only participating in the 4x400-meter dash relay but qualifying for state.”
Proviso West coach Robert Isaac stated that there is a bit more pressure compared to last year to do well in the finals, since they are determined to defend the state championship title earned last year in the 4x400-meter dash relay. Despite the pressure, Coach Isaac expressed that the team is having fun and is excited to represent Proviso West at the state finals.
PTHS D209 was also well represented in the girls track and field state competition by the following Pirates:
Leah Hillard - 400-meter dash and the 4X400-meter dash relay
Kara Floyd - 4X400-meter dash relay
Moneesha Gay- 4X400-meter dash relay

The Lady Pirates did an extraordinary job in the 4x400-meter dash relay ranking 20th in the state. Leah Hillard placed 22nd in the 400-meter dash while Aniyah Davis placed 16th in the long jump.
“The athletes did a great job in the state finals. I am proud of them and glad that they will all be returning next season. The team is full of young ladies who are not only talented on the field but also gifted in the classroom as they are all Honor Roll students. I look forward to the possibilities these young will be displaying in the upcoming years,” stated Proviso East head coach Devaughn Benion.
Best of luck to our athletes in the state competition which will take place on May 23 through May 25 at Eastern Illinois University!
