D209 Celebrates Grand Opening of Newly Renovated Proviso West Field House

On January 15, 2019 community leaders, students, coaches, and staff gathered for the Ribbon Cutting of the newly renovated Proviso West Field House which is the first project completed under the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 (PTHS D209) Facility Master Plan.

During the last 18 months the Board of Education and District leaders worked diligently to produce a comprehensive Facility Master Plan with funding options that ensure safe, secure, and conducive teaching and learning facilities over the next ten years. Although the capital projects are phased over a ten-year period, this week the school community had the opportunity to see one of the projects that is part of the vision for athletic facilities come to life.

“Year after year our track teams have not only met but exceeded their goals which includes once again competing at the State and National levels. Our students do their part by studying, training, and giving us their best every day, and my mission is to do my part by implementing a fiscally responsible plan that ensures our student-athletes have the equipment and facilities they need to take their achievements to the next level,” said PTHS D209 Superintendent Dr. Jesse J. Rodriguez.

“We are so excited about the Field House revocations because our students can see with their own eyes the investment our district is making to redefine the Proviso experience. And I am absolutely thrilled that our 4 x 400 State Champions now have a track they can brag about!” said Proviso West Principal, Dr. Nia Abdullah.

The Field House renovations included a complete replacement of the track, painting of the walls, ceiling, railings, trim and deck, door replacements, and installment of wall graphics with new school logos. The new track will allow the PTHS D209 track and field teams to raise the level of competitiveness, enhance scholarship opportunities, and take full advantage of one of the few high school field houses in the Midwest that can seat over 700 spectators.

PTHS D209 coaches are very excited about the positive changes that are taking place at the district. Proviso East Track and Field Assistant Coach, Mr. Steve Lawrence spoke on behalf of PTHS D209 coaches by stating, “I’ve been involved in Proviso over 40 years and the opportunity to have this completed in less than five months shows tremendous leadership and passion for our students. Our students not only have equal facilities as everyone else in our conference, but we actually have a state-of-the-art facility at Proviso. We are honored and grateful for this.”

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Athletics, and Safety, Dr. Tony Brazouski, further explained how the Facility Master Plan supports the vision of athletics at Proviso. He proudly referenced the new words of inspiration placed on the Field House walls that read “No Fear” and “No Excuses” and reminded the audience that we should continue to create equitable opportunities for our students with no fear and no excuses.

Dr. Brazouski further stated, “PTHS D209 is committed to equity, excellence and empowerment with equity being number one. Through equitable access students are empowered to set goals, strive to achieve those goals and through grit, determinization, and vision are able to come out on top; this is the vision for our athletic programs at Proviso.”
