Back to School Message from Superintendent
Dear Proviso Families,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! With a successful summer school program coming to an end, our devoted faculty and staff continue to prepare and plan for another exciting school year. Our team has been busy this summer registering new families, hiring new staff, and ensuring that our facilities and technology continue to support our students. As part our strategic 1:1 initiative, all students will receive a laptop at the beginning of the school year. The District will use Blackboard Classroom and Empower as the preferred tool to support teaching and learning. Blackboard Classroom and Empower are the preferred digital learning environments that will be used throughout the District to support teaching and learning. These platforms will allow us to personalize learning, increase student engagement, and improve communication with parents and guardians relative to instruction and learning in our district.
Our focus on your child’s achievement continues as our top priority as we collectively engage and prepare them for their future post-secondary opportunities and life. I personally thank you for your support throughout the school year and want you to know that I value your dedication to excellence in education. Engaging our PTHS D209 parents, families and community leaders with transparent and consistent communication is important to the success of our District.
Following is essential information regarding programs for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Board of Education set a clear direction relative to our partnerships with parents with the idea that together we will achieve more for our students. The School-Parent Compact defines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share responsibility and work together to build and develop a partnership to help students achieve their educational outcomes. The School-Parent Compact will be mailed to the families of all incoming freshmen. The School-Parent Compact is also available under the ‘Families’ link on each school’s website. We encourage you to read and review the compact with your child and make a collective commitment that enhances the educational experience at PTHS D209. For more information please contact your school principal) or Mr. Dan Johnson at 708-338-5938 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Extended Learning Opportunities for Students (ELOS)
PTHS D209 is excited continue our quest of support for all students through our Extended Learning Opportunities for Students (ELOS). During Period 1 (from 8:00 AM -8:50 AM) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, students at Proviso East and Proviso West will have the opportunity to participate in a range of ELOS activities which include: engaging in enrichment activities, receiving small-group and individual instruction from teachers, taking make-up exams and completing classwork, meeting with counselors, utilizing computer labs and library resources, and receiving support for math and literacy skills.
Attendance at ELOS is expected of all students. Again, this is time dedicated to help students succeed and/or extend their learning. Students may choose the ELOS activities that best fit their needs, unless they are specifically assigned to sessions to make up work or participate in interventions. Transportation to ELOS will be provided for student who receive bus service. You will receive more information regarding transportation, schedule of ELOS activities, and ELOS scheduling before July 30, 2019.
Vision 7 to 7
Research shows that students who are involved in after school activities benefit from improved grades, better standardized test performance and higher graduation rates. PTHS D209 currently offers extracurricular, athletic and academic support programs which take place after school. We have determined that students in PTHS D209 would benefit from an expanded range of supportive services and activities to address concerns related to: nutrition, mental and physical health, healthy socialization, and connectedness. Our new “Vision 7 to 7” program will provide afterschool programming at Proviso East and Proviso West every Monday through Thursday which will include access to a district-provided hot meal, followed by opportunities for academic and social-emotional supports, and recreational activities.
Attendance: Every Student, Every Day
Please take this opportunity as the new school year begins to discuss with your child the importance of being in school every day. Research shows that students who miss 10% or more of school days, for any reason, have a greater chance of failing classes and dropping out of school. Data from our school district confirms this research. Please partner with us in ensuring that Every Student is in school Every Day. For more information, please visit www.attendanceworks.com.
