• Dear Parents:

Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning families.

Parents, I will begin my letter by saying thank you, thank you for sharing, and collaborating. You embraced our school, our teachers, and our administration. Together we embraced our children’s future; our children of today and our children of tomorrow will continue to walk the halls of PMSA with pride.  Your continued support and perseverance strengthened our PMSA family and now we can continue our journey to be the best of the best!  I would also like to extend  a special thank you to our PTO president, Mrs. Anissa Butler-Burrell who put in extensive hours and time to help organize our parents and community to support our school.  PMSA would not be what we are today if it was not for the power and strength of our parents. You are the foundation of our school.  On behalf of my staff and administration we thank you for all you do and continue to do for our children and school.

As parents and educators, we share, we collaborate, we learn, and we grow as individuals when we celebrate the academic growth of our children. When we embrace our school, our teachers, our administration, and our community, we are embracing our children’s future. Our children’s future signifies the future of our country. This is what Proviso Math and Science Academy represents: an institution of advanced rigor, high standards and access to a direct pathway in pursuit of academic excellence. With that said, we are excited to share that PMSA has been ranked  8th in the state and 261st nationally  out of approximately 28,000 high schools and now holds the title of a Gold Medal School. In three years we traveled from Bronze Medal, to Silver Medal, to Gold! The accolades for 2018 do not stop here.  We were nominated for the National Blue Ribbon award.  This is the highest honor any school can achieve.  Only 16 schools in Illinois were nominated.  The results will be announced in September. If we are awarded the title, I will ask all our PMSA families to help us organize a celebration for our students so that we can honor their achievements.

Now, for housekeeping dates:  July 30-August 3 will be registration from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please plan on completing your child’s registration.

Freshmen Orientation will take place on August 17th and school will begin on August 20th for all students.

Please place the following dates in your calendars:

    Sept. 6th “Back To School

Oct. 4th “Bring Your Parent to School Day”

    Oct 18th “Parent-Teacher Conference”

Also, parents and guardians, please be informed that the Board of Education has developed a Compact in order to increase parental involvement and participation in our schools.  Parents are required to check the student performance tracking system (Power School). They shall check on assignment completions, grades, absences, tardies and discipline actions. You will be asked to sign this Compact as a memorandum of understanding and will be kept on file in the school building. Please read the Board Policy that has been included with my letter. When you come to PMSA we can discuss it in person.

And finally, I would like to welcome all back to our new school year.  Enjoy the rest of your summer; stay safe as we eagerly await our new year to begin. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.

    Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal
