PWMSA Program Overview
The Math and Science Academy at Proviso West (PWMSA) welcomed the inaugural Class of 2024 cohort at the start of the 20-21 school year. The Academy program offers the same honors level curricula as that at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy (PMSA) in Forest Park. Students enrolled in PWMSA courses benefit from a "small school" learning environment since they take classes with their Academy peers over the course of their four-year high school career. As such, they are able to develop meaningful relationships with their classmates and receive more personalized instruction from their teachers.
PWMSA courses aim to prepare students for entry into the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), which takes place during a student's junior and senior year.
Any sophomore at West in good academic standing who is not enrolled in PWMSA may still apply for entrance to the IBDP during 10th grade, with the Diploma Programme officially beginning at the start of junior year.
There are two pathways available for interested scholars:
- IB Diploma Candidate (student takes all IB Diploma Courses and fulfills IB Core Requirements).
- IB Certificate Course Candidate (student takes 1-3 IB Diploma Courses and/or Core Requirements).
An informational meeting for students and parents is held in October each year to explain the IBDP program and the application process.
Proviso West is in the candidacy phase for IB authorization. By the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the program is slated to become an official IB authorized school so that our current freshman cohort, and those thereafter, can begin their journey of graduating with an IB Diploma.
Students in the Academy program are full members of the Proviso West school community, and therefore eligible to participate in all athletic and extra-curricular opportunities and events.
