A duo of Proviso West High School students won third place recently at the fifth annual Des Plaines Valley Region Culinary Cook-Off at Triton College.

The team of
Christian Naugle and David Vela competed with five other teams in a close contest. They missed first place by a mere four points out of a possible 100 points and second place by two points, said Ms. Georgina Roney, a Proviso West family and consumer science teacher who advised Christian and David. The finish continued a trend of strong finishes by Proviso West students in the culinary competition, with Proviso West having finished in the top three in four of the last five years.

w-culinary-triton2-380"Actually they performed better than they had thought and as a result of their hard work they were thrilled to finish in third place," Ms. Roney said. "I was proud of their effort, the manner in which they conducted themselves, and the fact that they placed third in the closest competition to date."

The rules of the contest were similar to those of popular cooking competition television shows such as "Iron Chef" and "Chopped." Teams have 60 minutes to cook a meal, which is then judged on safety and appearance, how well they followed a recipe, and the appearance and taste of their finished dishes. This year’s competition had the students preparing grilled chicken, pasta, asparagus, and a salad – one of three meals for which they had prepared, but did not find out they would be cooking until the contest was about to begin.

Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that he was proud of Christian and David for their achievement.

"They have done very well in keeping Proviso West on top of this competition," he said. "Christian and David have shown they have taken the lessons they have learned in class to heart. We are proud of them and their accomplishment speaks of the great students we have and the great teachers who work with them."
