A defining moment can be that moment when a person’s life is changed forever by a simple act, oftentimes during the teenage years.

The Proviso West High School Drama Club tackles the effect of HIV and AIDS on teens with its spring play, "Defining Moments," April 15 and 16 in the Proviso West Little Theater. "Defining Moments" is a drama that follows a group of high school friends as they deal with the aftermath of learning that small decisions can have life-altering consequences.

"As a teacher I see students making the wrong decisions because they feel like it’s the thing to do," said Ms. Carissa Gillespie, a Proviso West English teacher and the director of the play. "I felt this play spoke to some of the things that students are going through, especially in making decision that they think last for a moment but have lifetime consequences. We’re hoping that bringing ‘Defining Moments’ to students can be kind of a cautionary tale and a catalyst for discussions in class or in their families or in their peer groups on why it’s okay to say not to things and why it’s okay to make the right decisions, especially when it deals with your future."

Demisha Hoover, a Proviso West senior, plays Brandy, a sophomore in college who learns that she is HIV-positive but still wants to have fun. Demisha said that she related to her character in a way.

"Since I’m a senior, I’m just trying to have fun," she said. "But I know I have a responsibility to protect myself and the people around me."

Brenden Palmer, a fellow Proviso West senior, plays several roles, including Bobby, Brandy’s ex-boyfriend who seeks revenge on her through her sister. He said that he played a role when the drama club performed the play during his freshman year, but this is a different role for what he said is a great play.

"The role of the ex-boyfriend is different, because I’m usually a protagonist, so you have to connect with a darker side of yourself, and I’m not really a mean person," he said. "This is a great play because it send a powerful message to the audience."

"Defining Moments" will be performed 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15, and at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 16. Both shows will be held in the Proviso West High School Little Theater. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults.
