March 30, 2016 01:18 PM
A team of Proviso West High School students will compete in the 2016 National SeaPerch Challenge at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on May 20 and 21.
The "Sea Panthers," comprised of science students and Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets, will be among 150 teams from across the country competing in categories that are judged on a poster board presentation and a technical event where they will be judged on their ability to navigate several obstacles.
The Sea Panthers qualified for the national contest after winning second place for their presentation of their vehicle and third place in the overall competition at the Chicago Regional Sea Perch Competition on March 19 at Great Lakes Naval Station.
Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that this is the latest honor for an NJROTC unit that continues to be a source of pride for Proviso West.
"We are very proud of them," he said. "They continue to show why they are among the best NJROTC units in the area and they continue to show the strong academics we have here at Proviso West. Our students should be congratulated on all of their success."
The following Proviso West students are members of the "Sea Panthers:"
  • Luigi Cabantog
  • Zavier Donati
  • Jesus Pena
  • Jose Solano
