Proviso West Senior Selected for Naval Academy, $180,000 Navy Scholarship

April 2, 2015 03:00 PM
Patricia Vazquez considers herself a focused person.
"I’m committed to what I like to do," the Proviso West High School senior said. "I set my eyes on the goal and I don’t stop until I get it."
That determination has helped Patricia in her studies and her participation in the Proviso West Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) program, first earning an $180,000 scholarship from the Navy. Most recently, she learned that she had earned an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.
"I’m ecstatic," Patricia said. "It’s a great opportunity."
To qualify for the $180,000 Navy scholarship, a student needs to score at least 530 on the critical reading portion, and a 520 on the math portion of the SAT. They must also score at least a 21 and 22 on the math and English portions, respectively, on the ACT. The student also has to be physically fit and an active member of an NJROTC unit. At Proviso West, Patricia is the unit’s Command Master Chief. After her junior year ended, she completed an application, wrote two essays detailing her leadership abilities, had a background check, and interviewed with a ROTC commander.
To be accepted into the Naval Academy, a high school student must receive a nomination from an official source such as a United States Representative, a U.S. Senator, or the Vice President of the United States. The student also must take the SAT or ACT and complete a medical examination and physical fitness test. They also must maintain excellent grades in high school classes and be involved in a series of extracurricular activities such as athletics and music.
Patricia has been an active student during her time at Proviso West, participating as a member of the Class of 2015 prom planning organization, as a member of the Principal’s Leadership Team, and as vice president of the Proviso West French National Honor Society along with her work in the NJROTC. She also works at a part-time job.
She said that her time at Proviso West has helped to shape her into the person that she has become.
"You have to have the determination," Patricia said. "If you don’t challenge yourself, it won’t happen."
Patricia said that she will start at the Naval Academy’s Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island, before enrolling at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, the following year.
Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that Patricia is an example of the exemplary students found at Proviso West.
"We have many great students attending Proviso West," he said. "For one to receive an opportunity such as this is extraordinary and a testament to her hard work and talent. I congratulate Patricia on her achievements and I look forward to continuing to hear great things from her."
Congratulations, Patricia, for helping to keep Proviso Rising!
