A group of Proviso West High School students competed at the Regional SeaPerch Competition on March 14 at Naval Station Great Lakes, with one squad winning honors.

SeaPerch is a Navy outreach program that is encouraging high school and middle school students to explore the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Most of the students from Proviso West who competed are part of the school’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) unit. However, two freshman students who are not part of NJROTC, D’Naria Busby and Luigi Cabantog, competed because of they are enrolled in Proviso West’s pre-engineering course.

"We didn’t just want to make this a NJROTC representation, but as a partnership with the engineering class as well," said Chief Alfonzo Whitten, an NJROTC instructor at Proviso West. "They were very enthusiastic about competing, being S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematic) motivated students that gave it their all and had fun doing it."

The SeaPerch Competition consisted of three challenges: the Finesse challenge, Obstacle Course, and Poster Board Presentation. Freshies in the Water, a team of Proviso West freshmen consisting of D’Naria, Luigi, and Jesus Pena, won third place in the Finesse challenge.

"For us to take third place overall in the Finesse challenge was a great feat in itself," Chief Whitten said. "The practice that we put in prepared our Proviso West teams in advance prior going to the competition paid off. That is something we should be proud of."

The Proviso West teams also had the chance to meet Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and Congressman Robert Dold.

Participating students from Proviso West included:

Sea Serpents (Seniors): Janisa Hicks,  Gerardo Diaz,  Coby Muriente,  Jose Montano

Poseidon (Juniors): Temi Oshinbango,  Sarah Scott,  Ladabi Neal,  Bernisha Hoover

The Survivors (Sophomores): Pedro Razo,  Erika Benitez, Olivas

Freshies in the Water (Freshmen): Luigi Cabantog,  D’Naria Busby,  Jesus Pena

Way to go!
