June 13, 2014 02:40 PM
The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit at Proviso West High School has earned Unit Achievement status again.

The Proviso West unit, led by Commander Gerard Egler, was one of nine schools in the area to earn the achievement. The unit continues to shine among area NJROTC units, having earn Distinguished Unit status in 2012 and Unit Achievement status last year.

According to area Commander George Clifford, who oversees area NJROTC programs, the competition among all area units competing for Distinguished Unit status and Unit Achievement status was close.

"Competition among all area units for Distinguished Unit and Unit Achievement awards was extremely close again this year, so Unit Achievement Award winners should take great pride in this recognition," he said.

Commander Egler said that the members of his unit and the greater Proviso community should be proud of earning the achievement.

"The category was twice as competitive as last year, yet we still proved ourselves to be ‘Nothing but the Best,’" he said.

Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that the NJROTC unit continues to be a source of pride for Proviso West.

"We are very proud of them," he said. "They continue to show that they are among the best NJROTC units in the area and they should be congratulated on all of their success."
