Proviso West Key Club Donates 1,500 Pounds of Food

April 25, 2014 09:45 AM
Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicago area will be getting a great deal of extra food, thanks to the efforts of the Proviso West High School Key Club.

The club collected 1,500 pounds of canned and non-perishable food from early January through early March, according to Charles Jalove, a counselor at Proviso West and the club’s sponsor. He said that 750 pounds of that food was collected through the Cook County Farm Bureau, with another 750 pounds delivered directly to the Maywood Ronald McDonald House.

"There were 18 boxes of food," Mr. Jalove said. "The cause is it helps people who are less fortunate who come to the Ronald McDonald House. There is always food for them. We’re showing them that we’re a caring community."

Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that the work of the students in collecting the food helps them to develop a sense of community service.

"Projects such as this teach students that if we start serving others early in life, they hopefully continue serving the community long after they graduate from high school," he said. "I’m proud of the efforts of our students in collecting 1,500 pounds of food to help families in need."
