Proviso West Wrestler Qualifies For National Tournament

June 9, 2016 03:16 PM
After failing to qualify for the Illinois state wrestling tournament in February, Jaleel Hollingsworth, a sophomore at Proviso West High School, considered not wrestling.
But after winning the state Greco-Roman wrestling tournament in April, Jaleel qualified for and will be competing for Team Illinois at the Asics/Vaughan Cadet and National Wrestling tournament in Fargo, North Dakota, July 16 through 23.
On April 23, he dominated the state Greco-Roman wrestling tournament by winning the championship with two pins and two technical falls, which means that the match ended because he scored 10 points more than his opponent. On his way to the championship, he beat a two-time Folkstyle state place winner and Cadet National’s All-American. He wrestled last year’s Greco-Roman state champion and Cadet National’s All-American during the first round.
As happy as he is, Jaleel said that he knows it is just the first step to winning in July.
"Greco State Champ…next is nationals," he said.
Wrestling at 106 pounds as a freshman, he wrestled every day with a 126-pounder. During that time and the year following, Jaleel has not lost a regular season match.
Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that he was proud of Jaleel.
"He is to be commended for his effort and his accomplishments, and I congratulate him," Mr. Hawthorne said. "We are all proud of Jaleel, and I wish him well in all of his future endeavors and I look forward to him returning to Proviso West this fall."
Congratulations, Jaleel, and good luck!
