Class of 2019 Visits Proviso West

March 5, 2015 03:20 PM
Volleyball. Newspaper. NJROTC. Academics.
These were just a few of the things that eighth-graders and their families learned about Proviso West High School at the school’s Future Panther Night on February 26.
It was an evening for members of the Class of 2019 to become more familiar with the school that they will call their own for the next four years.
"We just wanted them to walk around and experience Proviso West and put a name with a face," said
Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West. "This was about students making connections with each other. Proviso West has much to offer to students and we wanted our incoming freshmen to learn more about them."
The soon-to-be freshmen and their parents were able to visit tables set up by Proviso West’s activities and sports teams in the gymnasium. They were able to learn more about the school’s academics, support services, activities, and sports teams. They also could begin to think about registering for classes.
Mr. Edwin Sanchez, said that he wanted to learn more about the academic offerings at Proviso West, while his son, Michael Sanchez, currently an eighth-grader at Westchester Middle School, said that he was looking forward to participating on the school’s soccer team and the band. He also was impressed by the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC).
"They’re very disciplined, and their uniforms are sharp," Michael Sanchez said.
Ms. Lillian Baker was visiting with her daughter, Jonas Baker. Her older children had attended Proviso West, and she hopes for much of the same experience for Jonas.
"We’re glad that we came," Ms. Baker said. "We’re finding a lot of stuff. So far, we like what we see."
