Proviso West Fashion Students Learn Ease of Starting Their Own Business

March 26, 2015 03:15 PM
It can be relatively easy to start your own business, Ms. Shawn Sargent said to a class of Proviso West High School fashion technology students on Monday, March 23, at Proviso West.
"I take my drawings and designs and have them printed on fabrics," said Ms. Sargent, an artist and the owner of Shawn Sargent Designs in Glen Ellyn. "Hopefully I can give some different ways of getting their work out and that it’s not that hard to start a business."
Ms. Connie Jesukaitis, a family and consumer science teacher at Proviso West, said that Ms. Sargent’s talk coincided with the class’ unit on printing production, one that included a section on fashion entrepreneurship.
"The state of Illinois is embarking with giving designers a one-up," Ms. Jesukaitis said. "There’s a trend back toward manufacturing.
Students were also able to try out the app on their own phones, sketching sample designs.
Ms. Sargent discussed how she had worked as an artist and writer before launching her business in late 2013 in a lesson on fashion business. Using a drawing app on her cell phone, she sketches designs that are then printed on fabric and paper for gift wraps. The fabric is then sewn into home décor products such as pillows and tea towels.
Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that it is good for teachers to find different ways to reach students and show the different opportunities that are available to them.
"There are different ways of achieving success, and we as educators need to show those to students," he said. "When teachers have lessons that illustrate in a clear and real way the information that they are imparting, the students have a better chance of learning and retaining that information. We thank Ms. Sargent for taking the time to speak to our classes."
