State Board of Education Honors District 209 Educators

Seven educators from Proviso Township High Schools District 209 were honored with Awards of Recognition from the Illinois State Board of Education on October 17 in Normal as part of the ISBE’s Those Who Excel Awards Program.
 
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, received an Award of Recognition in the School Administrator category, while Ms. Amy Paulus, guidance counselor at PMSA, was honored in the Student Support Personnel category, and Mrs. Devon Harris, a special education teacher at Proviso West High School, was recognized in the Classroom Teacher category. In addition, an Award of Recognition in the Team category went to the English 3 Team from Proviso East High School, made up of Ms. Elizabeth Walker, the team leader and now assistant principal for educational services at Proviso East; Ms. Susan Katz, the special education liaison on the team, and Ms. Ashley Glickman and Mr. Clinton Alexander, Proviso East English teachers.
 
They were among more than 250 educators from across Illinois to be recognized at the banquet at the Marriott Bloomington-Normal Hotel in Normal just off of the Illinois State University campus. 
 
"Every day, our teachers, staff, and administrators are hard at work providing a quality education to our students," said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209. "For our educators to be recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education, it shows the great work that is being done in of our schools, and we are always pleased when others recognize it. I thank the ISBE for its recognition of these quality educators from our schools."
 
Other awards presented at the Those Who Excel Awards banquet included Awards of Excellence, Meritorious Service, and Special Recognition, as well as the Illinois Teacher of the Year, which went to Ms. Kim Thomas, a math teacher at Woodruff Career and Technical Center in Peoria.
