Proviso West High School senior, Luigi Miguel Cabantog, was one of three students to receive an invitation from Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to attend a briefing on the current opioid crisis by the President of the United States. Cabantog has served on the Board of the Illinois SAAD since 2015.

According to the organization’s website, "SADD works to empower teens, engage parents, mobilize communities, and change lives around the issues of traffic safety, substance abuse, and personal health and safety."

Cabantog joined SAAD to inform his peers about the problems that exist in the community such as underage drinking, distracted driving and substance abuse that must be addressed.

"SADD has given me an opportunity to lobby at the state and federal levels, host and plan conferences focusing on youth health and safety, and network with my peers across the country," said Cabantog.

Cabantog has worked closely with SADD to promote youth health and safety at Proviso West. On February 15, 2017, the Proviso West High School SADD chapter, in partnership with local State Farm agents, hosted a "Not So Secret Agent Challenge," to advocate against destructive decisions and help save lives.

Cabantog will continue to promote and lobby for health and safety awareness.  I’m glad that the opioid crisis is being addressed at a national level and that I had an opportunity to "join the President, First Lady, and administration officials to address drug addiction and opioid abuse by declaration of a Nationwide Public Health Emergency to address the opioids crisis. "
