Proviso West Graduate Branches Out With Memorable Interview, Internship

April 4, 2014 02:45 PM
A 2011 graduate of Proviso West High School is making the most of her time after high school.

LeMonica Gale is studying sports management with a minor in public relations at Columbia College in Chicago. During the three years since she graduated from Proviso West, she has interned with Proviso West alum and former Chicago Bear Ray McElroy at his Hope of Earth Foundation. She also has interviewed Simeon Wright, who is the cousin of Emmitt Till, an African-American teen who was killed in 1955 after he had allegedly flirted with a white woman.

"It was hard to listen (to the story) and type at the same time," she said of interviewing Wright.

LMGale2-300While at Proviso West, LeMonica, who is the daughter of Mr. Brandon Gale, building security supervisor at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, was active in sports, competing on the volleyball, basketball, and track teams. After graduating and spending a year studying at Western Illinois University in Macomb, she returned to the Chicago area and enrolled at Columbia College. Wanting to work in the sports and entertainment fields, she landed an internship doing marketing and communications with Ray McElroy’s foundation.

"I’m helping them get their database together and working with them on social media, getting ready for their summer football camp," she said.

More recently, LeMonica landed the interview with Simeon Wright as part of a class on the Black Arts Movement. Wright had been with Till, a Chicago native, when he had allegedly flirted with the white woman in August 1955. She said that it was a hard, yet enlightening experience in doing the interview for the article, which a faculty advisor is working to get published in the school’s newspaper, the Columbia Chronicle.

"Everyone knows the story, but it’s different hearing it from someone who was there," LeMonica said. "It was more believable to me."

LeMonica said that she plans to graduate from Columbia College in 2015. She then hopes to break into the sports or entertainment business as an event planner or a handling game day operations for a team such as the Chicago Bulls.

"There are a lot of jobs in sports management," she said.

Good luck, LeMonica, and thank you for helping to keep Proviso Rising!
