PEHS Students Attend Hamilton
On October 18, 2017 a group of Proviso East High School students had the opportunity to see and learn history through Hamilton.
Last school year, Proviso East High School librarian, Amira Shabana, applied for the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s Hamilton Education Program which invites Title I high schools to see the musical and to integrate Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Era into classroom studies.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute notified PEHS in August that it was among the schools selected into the program.
After approaching AP History classes with the opportunity to participate, Ms. Shabana worked with Mr. Kayser's AP History students, as they researched the Founding Era and created original work such as songs, rap, poetry, scenes, and monologues.
Picture1On October 18th, the class attended a performance of Hamilton. In addition to attending the performance, students participated in a Q&A with members of the Hamilton cast, witnessed winning performances by their peers, and had a surprise photo opportunity with Miguel Cervantes, the actor who plays Alexander Hamilton.
Twenty-seven schools participated in the program, but only fifteen schools were chosen to perform on the CIBC Theatre stage.  One of the students selected to perform on stage was Proviso East’s very own Anahi Soto.  In front of 1,800 of her peers, she performed an original spoken word, "Henry, for the people by the people."
"My experience with the Hamilton Education Program was exhilarating and awe-inspiring. From the project about the Founding Era, to seeing Hamilton: An American Musical on stage, there was never a dull moment. By having my classmates and I think outside the box, it allowed us to really absorb and connect with the history we are learning in the classroom," said Tysherra Okikhuare, Proviso East student.
Proviso East students had an experience they will never forget.
