Community members gathered at Burton Park in Maywood on December 5, 2017 for the unveiling of the Maywood Park District Christmas Holiday Windows brought to life by the artwork of Proviso Math and Science Academy students.  Students and community members gathered around the amazing displays and even decorated caramel apples, while enjoying some hot apple cider and hot chocolate.
"The Maywood Park District Christmas Holiday Windows exhibit allows me to collaborate with art students from our local schools to showcase their work through our seasonal art exhibits.  This project shows our youth that there is a bigger world outside of their community through reading and art. My goal is to inspire students to explore different authors and literature and to give them opportunities to collaborate with their communities," said Ms. Williams-Rone, Maywood Park District Board President.
Each year Ms. Williams-Rone, in collaboration with the Village of Maywood, organizes the "Bringing Books to Life Series" -  the Village of Maywood’s Christmas Holiday Window Project. In August, Ms. Williams-Rone sends an invitation to an author asking for permission to utilize their book for the local art project and by September she sends an invitation to a local school asking them to participate in the seasonal art exhibit.
This year’s participating author was Jason Porath author of Rejected Princesses and former DreamWorks Animator. Mr. Porath worked on the films Kung Fu Panda 2 & How to Train Your Dragon 2.  Jason Porath was very excited and honored that the PMSA students utilized his book for the exhibit.
Under the direction of Visual Arts Instructor, Kathleen Maltese, PMSA changed the curriculum of selected art classes to incorporate this exhibit. PMSA students used cardboard to bring Rejected Princesses characters to life,  The students were inspired by the images, including line art and flats of the characters provided by Jason Porath.
"My favorite part of this project was painting it and seeing it come to life," said a PMSA art student.
"I am glad that PMSA students had an opportunity to work on this exhibit as it allowed them to reflect on the author’s purpose as they created artistic illustrations for the book Restricted Princesses. Thank you to Maywood Park District and Ms. Williams-Rone for hosting this artistic event," said Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA.
"The event gave us an excellent opportunity to connect with our community and highlight the phenomenal work of our students. We are so proud of the art they produced and the connection they were able to make with our community partners in Maywood," said Mr. Bill Breisch, assistant principal at PMSA.
