During a series of open houses this fall, prospective students for the 2016-17 school year and their families can learn about the programs and activities available at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, with the next one scheduled for Thursday, December 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Applications for admission are being accepted in November and December, with a January 15, 2016, deadline.
Attending an open house is not a requirement for admission, but it is recommended. During the open houses, the students and their families will see a presentation about the classes and programs at PMSA, take a tour of the school, and meet with faculty, staff members, and students.
"We’re happy that admissions season is beginning for the 2016-17 school year," said Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA. "We would like all of the eighth-graders and their parents to come and find out information about our school, our programs, and our successes."
Students may begin to apply for admission to PMSA through January 15, 2016. All applications must be hand-delivered to the PMSA main office by that deadline or postmarked by the January 15, 2016, deadline. To apply, prospective students must live in the District by the time they would attend. They also must submit an application form which can be downloaded at pmsa.pths209.org/admissions
, recommendations from both their middle school math and science teachers, school transcripts for seventh grade sent by the school, and results from the EXPLORE test administered at the middle schools.
Incoming students also must complete the Naglieri non-verbal ability test and a written response to the Academy essay. The test and essay will be administered starting promptly at 9 a.m. on December 12, at PMSA. Completed applications are not accepted at the testing events, and must be submitted or postmarked no later than January 15, 2016, with the selection process taking place in late January and early February.
