At a ceremony in the main office at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy on April 15, Jose Jimenez sat at a table with two baseball caps in front of him.
"It has been decided that I will stay in Chicago," the PMSA senior and Proviso West football player said to friends and teachers gathered as he grabbed the cap from Concordia University Chicago. "I’m going to sign with Concordia University in Chicago."
Jose, who played defensive back for the Panthers, said that the decision was partially a financial one.
"I took a couple of visits and I really liked it there," he said. "It was a tough decision, but we had to find what was best financially for my family. There are a couple of guys I know that play there and they tell me that if I go there, I can make an impact."
Concordia University Chicago is a NCAA Division III school based in River Forest. It competes in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with schools including Illinois Benedictine University and Dominican University.
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that she is proud of Jose.
"This is a great opportunity for Jose to be able to continue his education after graduation," she said. "To be able to do so with the support of PMSA and Proviso West and his family is an asset that all students need in order to succeed."
Jose plans to major in athletic training while at Concordia.
