Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy received a surprise from a business in the community on Bring Your Parents to School Day on October 1.
As part of the welcome of parents in the school’s auditorium, the PMSA theater department was set to perform a 30-minute skit, Edgar Lee Masters’ "Spoon River Anthology." Before the performance began, Mr. Jeffrey Bates, manager of Ultra Foods in Forest Park, walked into the auditorium with his team to present a check for $500. The money could be spent any way school officials deemed fit, he said.
"It is our way of giving back to our community," said Mr. Bates, who stayed for the students’ performance.
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal of PMSA, said that the school would use the donation for the arts to enhance that program.
"I made the decision to give the $500 to the theatre arts classes," Dr. Karvelas said. "The students were cheering and were so excited. It was truly a dramatic moment, and we thank Mr. Bates and Ultra Foods for their generosity."
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that community support of schools is vital to the success of students.
"The success of our schools depends not only on the efforts of our students, faculty, and staff, but also the community," Dr. Collins-Hart said. "We need to continue building bridges to the community so we can continue to strength our schools and improve our students’ achievement. We thank Ultra Foods and Mr. Bates for their support of our students."
