Khushi Suri, who will be a senior at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, will spend a week in Aspen, Colorado, as part of the prestigious Bezos Scholars Program.
Khushi will attend the Aspen Ideas Festival with Ms. Rachel Sands, a PMSA social studies teacher, and 11 other student-teacher duos from around the United States as well as six scholars from Africa. The all-expenses paid trip will allow the scholars and their teachers to meet with international leaders, entrepreneurs, and other notable leaders that likely will include former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, news personality Katie Couric, and Arne Duncan, the U.S. Secretary of Education.
"I’m so excited because it will have people that I’ve looked up to," Khushi said.
Khushi was selected for the program following an application process that included an interview and letters of recommendations from educators including Mrs. Kim Echols, former principal at PMSA and now the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Proviso Township High Schools District 209. She also spoke with current PMSA principal, Dr. Bessie Karvelas, who said that Khushi was the right person to be selected for the Bezos program.
"I am obviously very proud of Khushi on her acceptance into the Bezos Scholars Program," she said. "She continues the tradition of students at PMSA leading the way for others, and we look forward to continuing to work with her next year."
Khushi’s work with the Bezos Scholars Program does not end with the festival, however. Upon her returning to PMSA, she is assigned to work with Ms. Sands on developing a local ideas festival. She said that she wants to organize an event that brings people together.
"I’d like to introduce PMSA and Proviso alumni who are doing well and have them speak on it," Khushi said. "It’s to get ideas flowing. I want to make this something that will continue on after I graduate."
