Prom is “Cancelled” in PMSA Spring Play

March 5, 2015 03:10 PM
Prom has been cancelled, at least in this year’s spring play at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy.
The PMSA theatre department will perform the Wade Bradford play, "Promedy," on March 12 through 14 in the school’s auditorium. The play follows the efforts of Beatrix, the student body president at a high school (Felicia Oduh), to get prom reinstated after "self-proclaimed drama geek" Dante (Tyler Pope) persuades the student government to cancel the entire event after he is rejected by cell phone-obsessed cheerleader, Kay (Abby Peterson).
Ms. Mary Scherer-Emunds, the play’s director, said that "Promedy" was chosen partially because of its comedic value, especially as many of the student actors were members of the PMSA comedic improv team in the fall.
"I think this one is really high on the entertainment values," Ms. Scherer-Emunds said. "We have the stereotypical high school characters: the jock, the nerd, the cheerleader and so forth. The characters cross over their lines and end up associating with people that they didn’t think they would be friends with, and so that’s a good message."
A chance to play a stereotypical high school characters such as those portrayed in teen movies such as "Mean Girls" and "The Breakfast Club" appealed to Felicia Oduh, who plays Beatrix. Felicia, a PMSA junior, said that Beatrix is a lot like herself.
"She’s a perfectionist and kind of bossy and I think I get like that sometimes, so it’s fun because it’s like being a more preppy version of myself," Felicia said. "She’s very involved in things, and I kind of relate to that."
Tyler Pope, who plays Dante, is a newcomer to the PMSA theatre, as he is a freshman at PMSA this year. He said that he is enjoying playing a character such as Dante.
"The character ‘Dante’ is a very dramatic, goofy character, and I’m like that in real life, so I can relate to him," Tyler said. "I do a lot of stuff that he does, and he tries to be funny so people will laugh and I do it all the same."
The PMSA theatre department will perform "Promedy" at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, and at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14, in the PMSA auditorium.
