Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy can add another top ranking to its list of honors.
PMSA recently was listed as the 25th best high school in the state of Illinois by SchoolDigger.com
, a national school ranking site. The site uses recent data from the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) and compares schools from across the country. According to the data, PMSA ranked above 96.3 percent of Illinois’ high schools with an average math score of 79.6 percent and an average reading score of 82.1 percent. In the rankings, PMSA climbed to 25th out of the 670 high schools in Illinois, up from 87th in 2013.
SchoolDigger.com is the latest list where PMSA has been counted among the top schools. In September, PMSA was ranked 230th nationally overall and 10th among Illinois schools based on its college readiness index score by Newsweek magazine. In addition, in the magazine's "Beating the Odds" rankings, which factor in a school's college readiness ranking and its level of poverty, PMSA ranked 65th in the country and third among Illinois high schools. In 2012 and 2013, the school ranked 14th among the top 20 public high schools in Cook County, according to rankings by Chicago magazine, and 32nd among the top 50 public high schools in the Chicago area, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, said that it is an honor to receive the recognition.
"I celebrate and acknowledge my teachers who made this happen, and the students who respected and embraced the changes that our leadership team brought to the school," she said. "The recognition motivates us to work even harder to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of all of our students to eventually achieve the number one ranking in the state of Illinois."
Congratulations to the students, faculty, and staff at PMSA!
