More than 200 parents and prospective students learned more about Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy at the school’s final open house for the year on December 4.
Those in attendance learned about the entrance and application requirements, met with teachers and administrators, and learned more about the curriculum and what activities are available for their students.
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, told the parents that the school is one of the top academic schools in the nation, according to a ranking released by Newsweek magazine in September. She added that the number of advanced placement classes at PMSA has climbed from 110 to 440 in one year, with more opportunities available also through dual credit courses and the International Baccalaureate program, in which PMSA currently is a candidate school that is pursuing authorization to become an "International Baccalaureate world school."
"This is a very special school," Dr. Karvelas said. "Your children are in a college prep high school and they’ll be able to go to any university. We have a lot of opportunities for our students because we have a curriculum that prepares them for the next level."
Other highlights of the evening included prospective students and their parents meeting with current students who discussed the activities at PMSA, a presentation by French students on visiting France and other French-speaking countries, and a discussion on medical treatment during the Civil War by Mr. Michael Kozma, a PMSA social studies teacher who dressed in a Union soldier uniform for his presentation.
Students who have completed the EXPLORE test and the testing at PMSA must turn in their applications by January 15, 2015. All applications must be hand-delivered to the PMSA main office by that deadline or postmarked by the January 15, 2015, deadline. To apply, prospective students must live in the District by the time they would attend. They also must submit an application form which can be downloaded at
www.pths209.org, recommendations from both their middle school math and science teachers, school transcripts for seventh grade sent by the school, and results from the EXPLORE test administered at the middle schools.
