A junior at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy recently was part of the first-place team at the Skating Council of Illinois state high school competition on February 21 at Oakton Ice Arena and on March 20 at Homewood-Flossmoor.
Lucas Rosa was part of a combined five-student team with Hinsdale Central High School at the competition. In the contest, the team members were judged on a series of figure skating maneuvers including jumps, spins, and flips. The team did well enough to earn first-place trophies at both contests.
"My friends and I put a team together and each does a part," he said. "You don’t want to let the team down. Every one of us skated consistently."
Lucas has been skating since he was in the first grade, and figure skating competitively since he was in the fifth grade. He said that he "just stuck with it" as he progressively grew his skills.
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, said that she was proud of Lucas.
"Our students excel in several different areas, including sports, and Lucas is the latest example of that," she said. "We are so proud of his accomplishments and expect to see and hear great things from him in the future."
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that she also was proud of Lucas.
"He is to be commended for his effort and his accomplishments, and I congratulate him," Dr. Collins-Hart said. "We are all proud of Lucas, and I wish him well in all of his future endeavors."
Lucas said that he hopes to continue skating through high school and competitively in college, where he plans to study sports training to one day become a skating coach.
