A Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy senior won a top prize recently at the DuPage County ACT-SO 36th annual Local Competition.
Kelechi Agwuncha won a gold medal in both filmmaking and sculpture at the contest in Wheaton. She was one of 11 students who won the top prizes in their respective categories as she competed with 64 high school students representing 29 area high schools. She and the other gold medal winners move on to compete in the national competition in Philadelphia in July.
ACT-SO, created by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), is "an academic mentoring and enrichment program that provides career exploration and a competition in 27 categories encompassed by the sciences, humanities, business, performing arts, and visual arts."
This is the second straight year that Kelechi has won a gold medal at the competition, having won in the sculpture category last year and competing in the national contest in Las Vegas.
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, said that she is proud of Kelechi.
"Excellence is a hallmark of our school, and Kelechi continues to show that she is a leader in her
field," Dr. Karvelas said. "We congratulate her and we are all proud of her accomplishments."
Congratulations, Kelechi, on helping to Keep Proviso Rising!
