Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, has been named High School Principal of the Year for the West Cook Region by the Illinois Principals Association.
Dr. Karvelas, who has been principal at PMSA since 2013, received the award at the IPA’s West Cook Region’s administrators’ breakfast on April 22 in Countryside. She was joined by the Middle School Principal of the Year, Dr. F. Daniel Chick of McClure Junior High School in Western Springs; the Elementary School Principal of the Year, Dr. Jennifer Ban of John V. Leigh School in Norridge; and the Assistant Principal of the Year, Ms. Lisa Deborah Oi of St. Therese Chinese Catholic School in Chicago.
Dr. Karvelas said that she was "very excited" about the honor.
"It’s a good feeling to know that my hard work is acknowledged and respected," she said. "But I attribute my success to my teachers and this was a team effort. They allowed me to lead them; together, we moved the school to the next level. Without them, I would not have been able to receive this award. I share this award with all of my Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy teachers. I would like to thank them for all they do and continue to do and for believing in me."
This is the latest honor for Dr. Karvelas. In October 2015, she received an Award of Recognition in the School Administrator category in the Illinois State Board of Education’s Those Who Excel Awards. In addition, PMSA has continued to rack up the honors under her leadership, being ranked among the best high schools in the state by publications and websites such as U.S. News and World Report, Newsweek, and SchoolDigger.com in recent years.
"Every day, our teachers, staff, and administrators are hard at work providing a quality education to our students," said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209. "For Dr. Karvelas to be recognized by the Illinois Principals Association, it shows the great work that she is doing at PMSA and in our district, and we are always pleased when others recognize it."
Congratulations, Dr. Karvelas!
