The chance to do biology research and continue playing soccer competitively will bring Alexus Minervini, a senior at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy, to Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, next year.
Alexus, who plays goalkeeper on the Proviso West High School girls soccer team, signed a letter of intent on March 5 to attend Mount Mercy, a four-year Catholic liberal arts university that is a member of the small-school National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In attendance were her mother, Ms. Erica Kuzzwara; her stepfather, Mr. Jason McCambridge; and Ms. Raven McMurrin, the head coach of the Mount Mercy women’s soccer team.
Alexus said that the research core class that she took at PMSA as well as the small nature of PMSA convinced her that she would do well at Mount Mercy.
"I really like the biology program," said Alexus, who had also considered the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. "They said that I would be a good fit there because I’m into research. I’m glad Mount Mercy has what I need to excel in both academics and athletics."
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, said that the school is proud of Alexus’ accomplishments.
"Alexus has proven to be a well-rounded student, as she has performed well in the classroom and on the soccer field," he said. "She has set a great example we hope other students follow and we wish her well in her future endeavors."
