A Proviso Township High Schools District 209 central office staff member was honored for her community service at the 13th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast at the Hillside Best Western on Monday, January 20.
Mrs. Althea Busby, executive assistant to the superintendent, was awarded the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2014 Dream Award at the breakfast for her "personal commitment to human relations and social justice," said Mr. Samuel Jones, a member of the Hillside Human Resources Commission, which hosted the breakfast with the Village of Hillside. The nominee needed to be involved in activities that support the dream of Dr. King including working hard in school, church, and the community to be a better citizen and helping people in need, he said.
Mr. Jones said that Mrs. Busby embodied those attributes through her past service as president of the Bellwood School District 88 Board of Education; her work at District 209, including the last six years as executive assistant to the superintendent, Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart; and with the local chapter of Special Olympics. Mrs. Busby, he noted, had recently been named the executive director of the Proviso chapter of Special Olympics.
"Our recipient is a strong advocate for the community," Mr. Jones said.
Mrs. Busby said that she was surprised when she found out that she had won the award.
"My first thought was ‘wow,’" she said. "It was really unbelievable. It is an honor to receive this recognition."
Dr. Collins-Hart said that Mrs. Busby is deserving of the Dream Award.
"Mrs. Busby always thinks of others and how to help them," Dr. Collins-Hart said. "She is truly deserving of any award that recognizes her immense contributions to the community, and I am honored to work with her. I congratulate her on the award."
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast also featured the Proviso West High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) unit posting the flag for the saying of the Pledge of Allegiance and a musical performance by Logan Curry, a senior at Proviso Math and Science Academy.
