Forty-nine Proviso Township High Schools District 209 students were honored for their excellence in math and science by the Society of Women Engineers and the American Association of Physics Teachers in a ceremony on March 9 at Proviso West High School.

Mr. Bob Hurley, a retired science teacher at Proviso East High School and an organizer of the ceremony, now in its 22nd year, said that the student winners of the awards should mention them in their applications for college and scholarships and resumes.

"The counselors in the colleges are going to recognize these awards," he said. "These are nationally recognized."

The honored students were able to thank those math and science teachers who had inspired them during their education, including Mr. Frank Lattyak, a Proviso West science teacher.

Alison Brennan, a student at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy credited her eighth-grade science teacher at Westchester Middle School, Mrs. Chelsea Gildow, with inspiring her to study science.

"I got a head start and it helped me a lot," Alison said.

Cinia McCray, a Proviso East student, credited the encouragement of her fourth-grade teacher at Lindop School, Ms. Shelly Ann Koduah, to enter a science fair that boosted her interest in science.

"Because of Ms. Koduah’s determination, I overcame," Cinia said.

Ms. Kristin Shumake of the Society of Women Engineers said that the award is a big deal.

"This is a big honor and you should give yourselves a big pat on the back," she said.

Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the students and teachers both have a stake in the students’ success.

"The students have done the hard work in learning the material, but the teachers also have worked hard in preparing the material in a way that is instrumental in motivating their students to learn," she said. "This kind of collaboration is vital for students in achieving academic excellence."
