Supporting English Learning Workshop
On Wednesday, February 07, 2018, new teachers at Proviso East High School gathered to explore how to best support English Learner (EL) students. Dr. Jeremy Burnham led the workshop: All About ELs-Supporting English Learners.
The focus of the workshop was to help teachers plan instruction for diverse learners, particularly EL students.  According to theTeachers’ Professional Practice Framework, "In order to ensure student learning, teachers must know not only their content and its related pedagogy, but also the students to whom they wish to teach the content."
Teachers were led through several activities that helped them in strengthening their understanding of how to identify an EL student, potential obstacles that an EL student may face and various strategies that could be used to support EL students academically.
Dr. Burnham used a new online and interactive instructional application called Nearpod that allowed participants to interact and engage in the learning process. Teachers accessed the online interactive program and received resources for differentiating instruction and assessment for English learners. All teachers who attended received a copy of Differentiating Instruction and Assessment for English Language Learners.
Teachers found the workshop to be valuable as it equipped them with additional tools that could be applied in the classroom to address their students’ needs.
Proviso East Assistant Principal Ms. Elizabeth Walker stated, "Knowing your students is key when planning meaningful lessons. Students learn in unique ways.  Potential gaps or misconceptions need to be addressed when planning learning activities or creating assessments.  Students whose first language is not English, as well as students with other special needs, must be considered when a teacher is planning and identifying resources to make sure that all students will be able to learn."
