It was a smooth start to the 2015-2016 school year as students at Proviso East High School, Proviso West High School, and Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy adjusted to their new schedules and new teachers, and for freshmen and new students, their new buildings.
Students experienced everything that the first day of school provides in finding their way to new classes and meeting new classmates and their teachers through activities that helped them learn what is expected of them in their classes.
"It was a great start to a new year," said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209. "It is our intent to continue this smooth start as we focus on our goals for this year, including raising student achievement through working together."
At PMSA, teachers introduced students to their classes and each other with activities ranging from designing turning disks out of paper to team-building exercises.
Raquel Alarcon, a PMSA sophomore, said that she planned to study hard to do well in her classes.
"I’m going to focus on getting my work done," she said.
At Proviso East, teachers welcomed students back to school, and students looked forward to the year ahead.
Harold McBeth, a Proviso East junior, said that he was looking forward to basketball season as well as his culinary arts class.
"I’m looking forward to cooking the food, trying new things," he said.
A similar scene played out at Proviso West, as a sunny day greeted students as they entered the school building ready for the new year.
Alyssa Washington, a Proviso West senior, said that she was looking forward to her senior year. She said that she hoped to join the Pantherettes dance team before going to college or the military.
"I look forward to a good school year," she said. "I want to leave high school with a bang."
Welcome back, students and teachers! Here’s to a great school year!
