Forest Park, IL...On the last day of the 2012-13 school year on Friday, May 31, at about 9:30 a.m., several students from Proviso East High School were reported in local media to have been involved in a series of fights outside of the school. The media incorrectly placed the fights at the school and on school property.
Contrary to the media reports, the disturbance did not happen at the school. They in fact happened past the corner of Ninth Avenue and Madison Street, almost a mile from Proviso East High School. Based on videos posted on social media, the fighting occurred at Ninth and Madison and further away from the school at 11th Avenue and Madison Street. None of the fighting in the videos occurred on the school grounds.
In addition to the students who may have been involved, witnesses have said that other adults and former students joined in the disturbance.
District officials were not made aware of the fighting that occurred until later in the day, since it occurred off campus and falls outside of the district’s jurisdiction.
We take safety and security of our students, staff, and school environment very seriously. That is the reason that extra procedures were put into place to ensure a smooth end of school year at Proviso East. Our school year ended without any incident, and we are very pleased to report that.
However, situations do happen in the community that involve our students, and while we are always concerned, it is not something over which we have any jurisdiction nor control. As a school community and partner, we want to always be a part of helping solve issues. However, incidents that happen away from the school should not be attributed to the school, regardless of who is involved.
We hope that our students and our community will have a happy and safe summer.
