Between 5 to 7.5 million students, nationally, are chronically absent each year. Excessive absence from school, whether excused or unexcused, affects students, their classmates, the school environment, and the community.
The Illinois School Code requires parents/guardians of students between the ages of 6 and 17 to ensure their students are in school every day, and defines chronically truant students as those who are absent without valid cause for 5 percent or more of the preceding 180 school days. That’s only 9 absences per year (or about one absence per month).
Proviso Township High Schools District 209 and the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance Network (PTMAN) are partnering to raise awareness of the importance of regular school attendance and to encourage EVERY Student to be in school EVERY Day.
Take the pledge to:
Encourage EVERY Student in your family, neighborhood, and community to be in school EVERY Day.
Help spread the message about the importance of regular school attendance.
Here’s why regular school attendance is important…
• When students are in school every day
They have access to the services and supports that are available.
They participate in the learning activities in the classroom
They are better connected to the school and their peers
• Students who attend school regularly are more likely to graduate and find good jobs. In fact, a high school graduate makes, on average, $1 million more over a lifetime than a student who drops out.
• Students who drop out are less likely to succeed in a career. And even those who do graduate won’t do well at work without good attendance habits. Nearly 80 percent of people in prison lack a high school diploma.
• A student who misses 10 days or more during a school year is 20 percent less likely to graduate from high school and 25 percent less likely to ever enroll in college.
