Several members of the girls basketball teams at Proviso East High School and Proviso West High School have been named to all-area and all-conference teams.
Da’Tasia Almon, a senior guard at Proviso East, was named to the Chicago Sun-Times’ girls basketball all-area team, while Mariah Henry, a sophomore guard at Proviso West, and Taylor Pate, a senior center, were named to Suburban Life Media’s all-area girls basketball team. In addition, Cinia McCray, a junior guard at Proviso East, was honorable mention on the Sun-Times’ girls basketball all-area team, while Coleanna Funches, a senior forward at Proviso West, was honorable mention on Suburban Life Media’s all-area girls basketball team.
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the girls deserved the honors that they have received.
"The girls have been great assets to their respective basketball programs and role models for other students at Proviso East and Proviso West," he said. "We are proud of them, and we look forward to further good things from them."
The Sun-Times said the following regarding Da’Tasia Almon:
A three-year varsity starter, Almon led the Lady Pirates to the second-best record in school history. She averaged better than 12 points, five rebounds, and nearly four assists per game while running the show for coach Ezra PridGeon. "She was the catalyst that kept the team glued together and moving in the right direction," he said, "She has great potential and a future ahead of her." The unsigned senior was an all-tournament selection at Oswego East and an all-conference West Suburban Gold Division pick this season. "Her pranks and basketball savvy will be missed," PridGeon said.
Suburban Life Media said the following regarding Mariah Henry:
The sophomore made a strong varsity debut this season as the Panthers’ point guard. She led the team in assists and steals while also being second in scoring.
Suburban Life Media said the following regarding Taylor Pate:
Pate, a Hampton University recruit, was a two-time all-conference player in the West Suburban Silver. The 6-foot-4 post player averaged a double-double this season for the Panthers.
In addition to the all-area honors, several players from both schools were named to the West Suburban Conference’s all-conference team. Da’Tasia Almon and Cinia McCray were joined by Diamond Copeland and Jasmine Levy as Proviso East’s representatives on the West Suburban Gold Division All-Conference Team. From Proviso West, Mariah Henry and Myia Thomas, both sophomores, were named to the the West Suburban Silver Division All-Conference Team.
