Ten Proviso East High School students recently won honors for their art work at the annual Triton College High School Artists Competition.
The exhibit at the Triton College campus included more than 200 examples of drawings, photography, sculpture, and other media by students from high schools in the Triton College area.
Ms. Marcia LaPorte, an art teacher at Proviso East who sponsored the students’ work with fellow art teacher, Ms. Daphne Hill, said that the show was "teacher juried," meaning each teacher in the area was able to submit a certain number of pieces. She said that the Proviso East students had success based on their strengths in drawing and photography.
"Our photography always has a strong showing," Ms. LaPorte said. "It basically depends on the judges’ personal opinion of whose work is ‘best’ as in most art competitions."
The following students won ribbons for their work during the competition, which took place from January 17 to February 12:
Red Ribbon: Danielle Jackson, Melissa Reese, Jacob Rosita, Shayna Simon, and Maria Solis.
Yellow Ribbon: Estephanie Arroyo, Kira Bacon, Maybelle Cardona, Carlos Colon, and Jasmine Payan
Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East, said that Proviso East has many talented art students.
"We have a lot of talent at Proviso East, and this exhibit is the latest example of that great talent," he said. "The students who entered their work and those who won ribbons should be proud of themselves and of the work they have done."
Congratulations, students! We are proud of you!
