Actor Tommy Ford had a message for students at Proviso East High School on Friday, October 9.
"You are beautiful," he said. "You are powerful. You are worthwhile."
Mr. Ford, known for his work on television programs such as "Martin" and movies such as "Harlem Nights," spoke to the students in four assemblies about his life growing up in Los Angeles without a father and later in the entertainment industry. Using part humor and part motivation, he said that everyone has the power to choose and the power to change their life.
"You are in control of your destiny," he said. "When you’re doing what you love to do, success will follow. You and I were born to win. We are winners."
Mr. Ford said that he came on the invitation of Dr. Patrick Hardy, principal at Proviso East. He praised the direction that the school is going.
"I had to be a part of what he’s doing on campus," Mr. Ford said. "I love motivating young people."
Dr. Hardy said that he wanted to bring in someone that students would recognize.
"I want to show them that they can succeed if they make the right choices," Dr. Hardy said. "Good examples of those good choices such as Tommy Ford help to drive that point home with them."
Markus Burns, a Proviso East senior, said that Mr. Ford’s message was one that "everybody needed to hear."
"I think somebody had to say it," Markus said. "It was better coming from someone we all know."
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, agreed, saying that successful people can be good role models for young students.
"The community as a whole can help to motivate students to succeed," she said. "I thank Mr. Ford for speaking to our students and providing that encouragement."
