Three staff members at Proviso East High School were commended by the Maywood Fire Department for their work in helping deal with the aftermath of a fire at the school in May.
Mr. Rodney Smith, a watchman at Proviso East, and Mr. Jerry Johnson and Mr. Frank Pieranunzi, security guards at Proviso East, were recognized by Mr. Craig A. Bronaugh, Maywood Fire Chief, for their help after a fire broke out at the school on Saturday, May 10. The fire caused damage to 10 classrooms and led to classes being cancelled for two days and the move of teachers and classes to other parts of the Proviso East campus for the rest of the 2013-14 school year.
Mr. Bronaugh said that Mr. Smith, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Pieranunzi noticed the fire and tried to put it out. When they were unable to do so, they then went to the auditorium and safely evacuated everyone inside.
In response, Mr. Bronaugh presented Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East, with a letter of commendation for the three staff members.
"They moved to help mitigate the incident," Mr. Bronaugh said. "The situation may have been different if they hadn’t been in the hallway when the fire happened. It was a big help that they were there."
Mr. Valente said that the staff members performed above and beyond the call of duty.
"They moved quickly to move everyone to safety, and as a result, no one was hurt," Mr. Valente said. "I am proud that they Maywood Fire Department saw fit to present to them a letter of commendation for their actions, and I thank them for all they do."
