Savannah Clark is ready for college, said Dr. Brian Colbert, assistant principal for athletics and activities at Proviso East High School.

"Savannah has shown first as a student she is prepared to go to college and second as an athlete she is ready to go to college," he said.

Savannah, a senior forward on the Proviso East girls’ basketball team, will continue her education and playing career at Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida, this fall. Her success at Proviso East, which included averaging 13.5 points per game as she helped to lead the Lady Pirates to a 27-4 overall record and a regional championship, was celebrated at a signing ceremony with family and friends looking on.

"My next step is going to Miami Dade College and the coach and I have talked about being all-conference and winning freshman of the year and winning a national championship," Savannah said of choosing Miami Dade College. "The atmosphere felt like a home away from home and the coach (Susan Summons) was very welcoming and she put me under her wing and I loved it."

At the ceremony, family, friends and Proviso East teachers, coaches, and administrators celebrated her success.

Her coach at Proviso East, Mr. Ezra PridGeon, said that as a captain on this year’s team, she helped to lead the Pirates to the second best record in school history. He added that she has grown during her four years on the varsity team.

"She works hard," Mr. PridGeon said. "She has grown athletically and as a player, to believe no one can stop her."

Dr. Patrick Hardy, principal at Proviso East, said that he was confident of her success.

"You’re entering one of the most interesting times in our world," he said. "There is a fight and who you are matters in that fight. But I have a feeling Miami Dade is not the final stop."

Savannah, who also considered St. Francis University in Joliet, Illinois Benedictine University in Lisle, Savannah State University in Georgia, Loyola University Chicago, and Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, said that she plans to study criminal justice.

Congratulations, Savannah!
