The Proviso East High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Color Guard recently participated in a ceremony for the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs.
In a ceremony at the James Thompson Center in Chicago on February 19, the Proviso East NJROTC joined with the Department of Veterans Affairs in honoring the Tuskegee Airmen and Mr. Jesse White, the Illinois Secretary of State who also is a veteran. The ceremony was part of the state’s celebration of Black History Month. The cadets had the opportunity to meet with veterans in attendance to thank them for their service. In addition, Gov. Bruce Rauner was in attendance, and told NJROTC leaders that he was very pleased with how the cadets conducted themselves.
"We are grateful and humbled to be post colors for those who have laid down their lives for our freedom," said Commander Darryl Person, the senior naval science instructor at Proviso East.
Dr. Patrick Hardy, principal at Proviso East, said that the NJROTC unit continues to be a source of pride for Proviso East.
"We are very proud of them," he said. "Our NJROTC unit continues to succeed and impress in all areas, and I commend them for their hard work and success."
