Commander Joseph Hankins, the area manager for Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) based at Great Lakes Naval Station, had a simple statement to make regarding the Proviso East High School NJROTC unit’s inspection on March 26.
"You passed your inspection," he announced to applause from the gathered crowd of cadets, administrators, dignitaries, and parents at the Pass in Review ceremony in the Proviso East Fieldhouse. "Great job. The hard work showed."
The Proviso East unit of 119 student cadets demonstrated its ability to perform to standards as its platoons paraded in front of school and NJROTC leadership as part of the Pass in Review ceremony. In attendance were parents and dignitaries including Mayor Edwenna Perkins of Maywood and Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209. The inspection had included the NJROTC building being inspected by area commanders.
"The students in the NJROTC are exemplary students," said Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East. "They have shown that they have the discipline to succeed in a rigorous program and later in life. This program is among the finest in the region, and our student participation has always been strong. We are very proud of those students who continue to strive for excellence in this program."
Commander Darryl Person, an instructor in the Proviso East NJROTC program, said that the unit had come a long way since he started at Proviso East in October 2014.
"Our cadets have worked very hard this week and prior weeks getting ready for this night," he said. "They have gone way beyond our expectations."
Commander Hankins said that support from administration and parents was vital to the cadets’ success. He added that the student cadets should be active in the school, participating in activities including sports and drama.
"By participating in all of those things, you will be a better person," Commander Hankins said. "I challenge you to be a good follower. Once you’re a good follower, then you’ll be a good leader."
